Why give?

Here’s what our program participants have to say about NewFilmmakers Los Angeles:

  • NFMLA is a one-of-a-kind inspiring and educational experience. The industry sessions are truly invaluable and I was lucky to form some amazing connections as a result. I learned so much and was honored to be featured with some excellent films. This is a festival that truly cares about their filmmakers — not just with their selected film, but with their long-term careers. You don’t want to miss it!

  • I had the greatest experience with New Filmmakers Los Angeles. From that very surprising first phone call, to the in person festival, I knew this was a great opportunity run by people who wanted to see me win. They really go above and beyond to help you succeed. They have such an eclectic family that you’ll always feel like you belong. I’m very grateful for the chance to be part of this film festival. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to shining light on new Filmmakers. I don’t know what comes next but I feel supported and proud.

  • Starting as a new filmmaker is hard, and the NFMLA team understands that. Many film festivals screen the movies, but NFMLA has fantastic resources, which as a new filmmaker, I felt were outstanding. Industry panels were one of the most helpful resources provided to us filmmakers. We got to talk to people from the industry, ask questions and connect with them. And I got to see incredible films and listen to immensely talented filmmakers.

  • Often, we only need simple words to describe great things. As a Korean immigrant to Canada, I am always thankful for these simple words. They allow me to convey my meaning easily and clearly so there can be no mistaking my meaning. In this case, the simple words in mind are 관대 (“generosity”) and 고마움 (“gratitude”). When used earnestly, these words have true weight. I hope my feelings get across, then, when I say that the NewFilmmakers LA Film Festival (NFMLA) has been truly generous to filmmakers like myself, and I hope they can feel my sincere gratitude for the opportunities they’ve given. The greatest honor of the festival was being able to screen my film alongside so many other great films. The line-up was truly wonderful! Yet the most rewarding opportunity was in meeting the creators of those films during our meetings with industry professionals. Not only were these meetings informative and inspiring, but it also felt like community. Reaching from Toronto to Los Angeles, it felt like we were bridging a river that too often separates us. This was made possible by the generosity of the organizers and the professionals who lent us their expertise, so they deserve every bit of gratitude we can muster. Going forward, I think it is important for us as filmmakers to pay this opportunity forward to others. Having received support from others, it is my hope that I will be able to share these experiences to continue the cycle to promote our filmmaking communities on both sides of the border.
