Join us for a conversation with NFMLA alumni and Best of NFMLA Award Nominee, Allan Deberton (director), Karen Castanho (producer), and Yuri Gomes (Gugu) of Gugu’s World, winner of the Crystal Bear and the Grand Prix of the International Jury in the Generation Kplus section at the 76th Berlinale, and Brazil’s submission for the Oscar for Best International Feature. They will share insights into bringing a tender coming-of-age story to the screen, working with a young lead, and the festival journey that carried the film from Brazil to Berlin, Guadalajara, and the awards race.

Synopsis: At the heart of the film is Gugu, an 11-year-old who loves dancing, glitter, and capes while starring on his soccer team. As he navigates a strained relationship with his remarried father and cares for his grandmother Dilma, whose memory is fading, Gugu learns to embrace who he is and to cherish the people he loves.
