NFMLA Panel: Writing for Comedy Series

January 22, 2021 07:00pm PST - 08:30pm PST

Join us for a conversation on writing comedy for television. We’ll hear from writers and industry professionals Chris Marcil (What We do in the Shadows, Fraiser, Hot in Cleveland) and Sam Johnson (What We Do In The Shadows, Frasier, Crowded) to learn their experiences in the comedy room to show running, bringing humor onto the page and their advice in building a career in TV writing. More to be announced.

Bio: Sam Johnson & Chris Marcil have written for some of the most notable TV comedies of the past three decades, including Beavis and Butt-head, NewsRadio, Frasier, How I Met Your Mother, and What We Do In The Shadows. Their WWDITS episode, “Collaboration,” was an Emmy nominee for Outstanding Comedy Writing in 2020. They were also showrunners of TV Land’s Hot In Cleveland and the pilot and a number of episodes for the animated show Daria. Currently, Sam is a co-executive producer on WWDITS and Chris teaches writing at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

Bio: Lauren O’Connor is a Librarian in the Writers Guild Foundation Library, where she helps to build and provide access to a collection of over 40,000 produced film and television scripts. She can often be found behind the reference desk, processing archival collections, contributing to the WGF blog and moderating discussions with writers.
