NFMLA Virtual Conversation | How Art Direction Shapes Story, Tone, and Performance with Jake Tremblay

January 16, 2026 02:00pm PST - 03:30pm PST

Join us for a virtual conversation with Art Director Jake Tremblay, whose work includes the Oscar-nominated Marcel the Shell with Shoes On and Skincare, starring Elizabeth Banks.

In addition to his work in narrative film, Jake has collaborated on music videos for artists such as Taylor Swift, The Killers, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Drawing from his process on Marcel, he’ll explore how art direction shapes tone, emotion, and the lived-in worlds audiences connect with, as well as the collaborative role art direction plays in bringing a story fully to life.

Jake Tremblay Art Director

About Jake Tremblay:

Born and raised in northern New England, Jake developed a passion for art, drawing, and fantastical storytelling through fine art training and years spent exploring the woods and historic landscapes of New Hampshire and Maine.

Homeschooled through early adolescence, Jake was accepted to Cornell to study physics, but chose instead to pursue a creative career, beginning with theater studies that shaped their collaborative approach to storytelling.

Jake then began working in the indie production world, and took part in a film Production Assistant mentoring program, which they now mentor in, before moving west in 2015. Once in Los Angeles, Jake built a career in the Art Department, collaborating with directors including Dean Fleischer-Camp and working on projects across film and music videos for artists such as Taylor Swift, SZA, and Grimes.

They are a member of the Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) and founding co-chair of the Green Committee, promoting sustainability and circularity in the Art Department.

When they’re not on set, Jake enjoys caretaking and handyperson projects, music production, organic gardening, hiking, snowboarding, and traveling. They also take part in various mutual aid and volunteer opportunities with the goal of improving their local community.

Jake is committed to working with and uplifting underrepresented communities and has signed the Change the Lens pledge, advocating for more equitable representation within the commercial and music video industry.
