Monthly Film Festival

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA)’s August line-up celebrates emerging filmmakers both near and far, featuring InFocus: International Animation, a program of exciting animated work from all around the world, and introduces InFocus: US Animation, a collection of animated films from talent in the US. The day’s line-up also includes the Los Angeles premiere of director Kieran Thompson’s heartfelt feature, The Only Way Out is Through.

The day begins with shorts program InFocus: US Animation, a collection of US-based animation that will inspire, commiserate, awaken and tug at the heartstrings. This program showcases many different animation styles and has something for everybody. 

The afternoon’s programming continues with InFocus: International Animation, a  slate of animated films and stories from Argentina, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Taiwan and the United Kingdom by an array of international talent. The program encompasses a variety of animation styles that capture our imaginations and tell powerful stories.

The night concludes with the Los Angeles premiere of narrative feature The Only Way Out is Through, directed by Kieran Thompson and written by Kyle Dickinson. The award-winning film and its wilderness-faring protagonists offer a meaningful and vulnerable look at male friendships and men’s mental health.

NFMLA showcases films by filmmakers of all backgrounds throughout the year, across both our general and InFocus programming. All filmmakers are welcome and encouraged to submit their projects for consideration for upcoming NFMLA Festivals, regardless of the schedule for InFocus programming, which celebrates representation by spotlighting various communities of filmmakers as part of the NFMLA Monthly Film Festival. This project is made possible in part by grant support from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).  

The South Park Center is an ADA compliant venue and is wheelchair accessible. We request captioned films from all filmmakers participating at our Festival. For any accessibility needs, please send a request to info@nfmla.org at least 72 hours prior to the event.
