NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) hosts its January Monthly Film Festival, spotlighting fighting ageism with InFocus: Counter-Ageism program, along with a selection of short film highlights from its ongoing program, as well as Dalila Droege’s debut feature No More Time.

The day starts with January Shorts, an exemplary collection of comedy, sci-fi, drama music video and documentary work. Films in this block cover topics ranging from following your heart, resisting assimilation, challenging traditions, facing a painful past, poignant losses, bittersweet regrets, and heroic journalists fighting to expose genocide.

The evening continues  InFocus: Counter-Ageism, a collection of films that feature aging protagonists, narratives that challenge stereotypes about age and filmmakers whose work challenges those same stereotypes. This program shows its protagonists seizing life, celebrating their bonds, navigating painful life transitions, working through intergenerational trauma, navigating a world with pointed rules about aging and embracing their passions.

The night concludes with No More Time,  the first feature film by writer-director Dalila Droege, a suspenseful horror film set in the midst of a strange virus that affects different people differently and makes it hard to know who to trust.  Our inspirations were films and works of art that dealt with the past sins of humans catching up to them in unexpected ways,” says Droege of her team’s creative vision.

NFMLA showcases films by filmmakers of all backgrounds throughout the year, across both our general and InFocus programming. All filmmakers are welcome and encouraged to submit their projects for consideration for upcoming NFMLA Festivals, regardless of the schedule for InFocus programming, which celebrates diversity, inclusion and region by spotlighting  communities of filmmakers within our filmmaking community as part of our monthly program. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The South Park Center is an ADA compliant venue and is wheelchair accessible. We request captioned films from all filmmakers participating at our Festival. For any accessibility needs, please send a request to info@nfmla.org at least 72 hours prior to the event.
