NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) hosts its January Monthly Film Festival, spotlighting fighting ageism with InFocus: Counter-Ageism program, along with a selection of short film highlights from its ongoing program, as well as the West Coast Premiere of writer-director Mylissa Fitzsimmons’ feature The Long Run.
The day starts with January Shorts, an exemplary collection of comedy, sci-fi, drama, mystery, musical and documentary films. Films in this block zoom in and out in their perspectives to cover explorations of self, family dynamics, community dynamics and beyond. The block concludes with The Singers, the genre-bending and innovative latest from Oscar-nominated director Sam Davis.
The evening continues InFocus: Counter-Ageism, a collection of films that feature aging protagonists, narratives that challenge stereotypes about age and the fear of aging and filmmakers whose work challenges those same stereotypes. This program shows its protagonists seizing life, shining bright, navigating painful life transitions and explores aging in community and what that means on a societal level.
The night concludes with the West Coast Premiere of The Long Run, the sophomore feature film of writer-director and NFMLA alum Mylissa Fitzsimmons. This fun, lighthearted road trip film offers an existential reflection on the nature of ambition and friendship, as two strangers hitch a ride together towards their dreams.
NFMLA showcases films by filmmakers of all backgrounds throughout the year, across both our general and InFocus programming. All filmmakers are welcome and encouraged to submit their projects for consideration for upcoming NFMLA Festivals, regardless of the schedule for InFocus programming, which celebrates representation by spotlighting various communities of filmmakers as part of the NFMLA Monthly Film Festival. This project is made possible in part by grant support from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
The South Park Center is an ADA compliant venue and is wheelchair accessible. We request captioned films from all filmmakers participating at our Festival. For any accessibility needs, please send a request to info@nfmla.org at least 72 hours prior to the event.
